That $30 Temu clothing order to Ontario? After 18% duty, 13% HST, and a $9.95 Canada Post fee it's closer to $44. The carrier fee alone is often bigger than the duty.
The CAD $20 de minimis catches everything from China. There's no buffer for Temu/Shein/AliExpress orders.

Four things that hit your wallet when a package crosses the border.
Canada's de minimis threshold for postal and courier shipments from China is CAD $20. Anything over that is dutiable and taxable in full. There's no partial exemption. A $21 order owes full duty and tax on all $21, not just the $1 above the line.
Compare that to orders shipped from the US or Mexico by courier: no duty under CAD $150, no tax under CAD $40. Temu and Shein ship from China, so that higher threshold doesn't apply.
CAD $20 threshold for China-origin parcelsCanada Post charges a flat $9.95 handling fee on every dutiable parcel, regardless of how small the duty is. On a $30 order where you might owe $5.40 in duty, the handling fee is nearly double the actual duty.
Courier services (UPS, FedEx, DHL) charge tiered brokerage fees: $7 on small orders up to $48+ on orders over $350. The carrier fee is the #1 surprise on Temu and Shein deliveries.
Canada Post: $9.95 flat. Courier: $7 to $48+The US $800 de minimis has been eliminated for all countries (EO 2026-02-20). Every parcel entering the US is now dutiable, no matter how small. For China-origin goods, the tariff stack is: MFN base duty + 25% Section 301 China surcharge + 10% Section 122 global surcharge.
The Section 122 10% surcharge is under court challenge and set to expire around July 24, 2026 by statute. Totals for US buyers may drop after that date.
$800 de minimis gone. China tariffs stack 3 layers deep.Canada: Clothing, footwear, and bedding face 18% duty (the highest common rate). Bags and backpacks are 11%. Jewelry is 8.5%. Electronics, toys, video games, sporting goods, and books are duty-free under WTO agreements, but still face full import tax (GST/HST) once above the $20 threshold.
US: Clothing runs 16% MFN base, then +25% Section 301 China on top. Electronics are ITA-free for the base rate, but Section 301 and Section 122 still apply to China-origin goods.
Electronics duty-free; clothing 18% in CanadaMFN rates apply to goods from China and most non-CUSMA countries. Tax (GST/HST/PST) is charged on top of the value + duty once you're above the $20 threshold.

The calculator uses a calculation engine with rates sourced directly from official government documents, verified June 2026. For Canada, the duty rate for each product category is sourced from the CBSA Canada Customs Tariff 2025 (HS chapters and tariff items verified against the published schedule). Provincial import tax rates are taken from CBSA Memo D2-3-6 Appendix A, which confirms that CBSA collects the full combined rate (GST + PST/QST) at the border, not just federal GST. The carrier fee schedule uses Canada Post D17-1-22 for the $9.95 postal fee and the UPS Ground brokerage tier table (secondary source, verified June 2026) for courier estimates.
For US rates, MFN base rates are sourced from the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and broker guides 2026. Section 301 China tariffs (25% for Lists 1-3, 7.5% for List 4A consumer goods; calculator uses 25% as a conservative headline) are sourced from CBP and USTR. Section 122 is sourced from 19 CFR 24.23 and Federal Register 2026-02-24. De minimis suspension from EO 2026-02-20. US totals are labeled estimates due to active litigation (Federal Circuit stay on Section 122 as of May 12, 2026) and the July 24 statutory sunset.
The Section 122 surcharge could expire July 24, 2026, or get extended. We'll send one email when the rules change.
